Why Routes Matter in Manufacturing
To appreciate the power of Odoo manufacturing routes, it’s crucial to understand what they are. Think of a route as a roadmap. In manufacturing, a route outlines the steps, materials, and resources required to convert raw inputs into finished products. It’s not just a static document; it’s a dynamic system that adapts to the nuances of your operations.
In Odoo 18, routes become even more robust. This version introduces intuitive tools for:
- Configuring complex production flows
- Managing operations across multiple work centres
- Synchronizing tasks to minimize downtime
Whether you run a small artisanal workshop or a sprawling industrial plant, the ability to modify routes in Odoo 18 manufacturing can raise your business to new heights.
A Problem Worth Solving
Let’s delve into a relatable scenario. Maria owns a small bakery that specializes in gourmet pastries. Despite her recipes being a hit with customers, her production was plagued by inefficiencies. Orders were delayed, ingredients went missing, and her team felt overwhelmed.
Maria realized she needed a better way to manage her manufacturing process. That’s when she discovered the magic of the Odoo 18 routing setup. By defining routes for each product from dough preparation to packaging, she eliminated bottlenecks and improved her team’s productivity. Today, Maria’s bakery runs like clockwork, and she attributes much of her success to Odoo manufacturing routes.
The Magic of Odoo 18: A Deep Dive into Routing
What sets Odoo 18 routing setup apart from traditional manufacturing tools? It’s the attention to detail and the smooth integration with other Odoo modules. Let’s break down how you can implement routes step by step:
To begin, go directly to the Inventory module.
Go to Configuration > Settings
And enable Muli-Step Routes
Routes are the backbone of your manufacturing process. Each route specifies the sequence of operations required to produce a specific item. For example, a route for assembling a laptop might include:
- Component assembly
- Quality testing
- Packaging
Then, again, go to Configuration > Warehouses
Click on the warehouse
This shows the warehouses and their different levels. We can set the levels of warehouses to 3 steps. Then click on the Routes button at the top.
Now, you can see the routes that Odoo ERP automatically creates.
Here, we will perform the different Pull and Push operations. When we place a manufacturing order, the components are picked up and moved to the production area. The manufacturing is done from there, and the product is transferred to the warehouse stock.
Let’s move on to the Manufacturing Module.
Then go to the Products menu and click on Products.
And open the product ”Cabinet with Doors”.
To manufacture the product Cabinet with Doors, we want different components such as screws, bolts and wood panels. As you can see, the on-hand quantity of this is 33. Click on BOM, which is the Bill of Materials.
A Bill of Materials (BOM) is the recipe for your product. By linking routes to BOMs, Odoo ensures that every material is allocated to the right task at the right time.
We must tell our system we want to manufacture the cabinet with doors using the components. So, we have to set the BOM that includes the elements such as screws, bolts and wood panel, as well as going to perform the manufacturing in three steps; you can set the reference.
When you click on the Operation tab, you can see the operation called Assemble and we set Work Center as Assembly 1.
Work centers are where tasks are executed. Configuring them correctly ensures that resources are used efficiently. In the Odoo work center configuration, you can assign machines, define costs, and set capacities to prevent overloading.
